What Antigone Is About
Yorgos Tzavellas’s 1961 film adapts Sophocles’s Antigone, from a screenplay he wrote himself. In Thebes, Oedipus’s two sons Eteocles and Polynices agree to hold the throne in alternating years; when one refuses to step down, an army is raised and the brothers kill each other. Creon gives Eteocles an honourable burial and leaves the body of Polynices, whom he counts a traitor, unburied on the field. Antigone buries her brother in defiance of the order, and Creon has her sealed alive in a tomb. Irene Papas plays Antigone and Manos Katrakis plays Creon, with hundreds of actors from the Greek stage and the horsemen of the Royal Guard in the production.
