What The Cowards Who Looked to the Sky Is About
The film runs on two lines. One is a relationship between a married, depressed woman and a boy still at high school; the film does not romanticise it and keeps the difference in age and position visible. The other is the boy’s closest friend, a young man scraping by and trying to look after both himself and a grandmother losing her memory. The two lives cross, and what comes out of it is both a heavy picture and a fragile hope. Yuki Tanada directed, from an award-winning novel by Misumi Kubo that took the R-18 Literature Prize and the Yamamoto Shugoro Prize. It opened in Japan on 17 November 2012 and was rated R18 for its sexual content. The summary in the record carries em dashes that came in from an external source.
