What The Cowboy and the Lady Is About
Mary is the daughter of a politician running for president and has spent her life behind closed doors, among bodyguards. While her father is off campaigning she slips away from the house. She goes along to a date the maids have arranged, introducing herself as a maid too. The man she meets is Stretch, who rides in rodeos. He has no idea who she is, and she does not tell him. H. C. Potter directed this romantic comedy for Samuel Goldwyn. Gary Cooper and Merle Oberon take the leads, with Walter Brennan in the cast. The film won an Oscar for sound. The telling makes the class divide the engine of the comedy: the longer the lie holds, the better. It looks like a western, but the thing is really a drawing-room comedy.
