The Farmer's Daughter

Katrin Holstrom grew up on a farm in a Swedish-American family. She goes to the city to train as a nurse, has her money stolen, and has to find work. She takes a job as a maid in the house of Congressman Glenn Morley. The house is full of politics; Katrin listens, learns, and one day at a meeting she stands up and says what she thinks. What she says gets the attention of the other party, and they ask her to run. She agrees, which means running against the household she works in. H. C. Potter directs the American film; ninety-seven minutes, with Loretta Young as Katrin, Joseph Cotten as Morley and Ethel Barrymore as his mother. Young won the best actress Oscar for the part. It was later turned into a television series of the same name.
