What The Cure in Orange Is About
The Cure's first concert film, shot over three August nights in 1986 at the Roman amphitheatre in Orange, in the south of France, and released more than a year later in November 1987. The set leans on the record the band was touring at the time, The Head on the Door, but reaches back through the singles to the earliest material. Tim Pope, who by then had directed almost all of the group's videos, keeps the stage inside the two thousand year old stone instead of isolating it, and stays with the crowd on the terraces as much as with the band. The lineup captured here did not hold together much longer, which gives the film the shape of a closing document.
