What The Curious Adventures of Mr. Wonderbird Is About
A chimney sweep and the shepherdess he loves run from a tyrant, with a bird helping them along. Paul Grimault and Jacques Prévert began the film in 1948, working loosely from a Hans Christian Andersen tale, but Grimault’s partner André Sarrut showed it unfinished in 1952 against his wishes, which broke the partnership and stopped the work. The version released in 1953 was disowned by both Grimault and Prévert. Grimault got hold of the film again in 1967, brought his old animators back together with some younger ones, and finished the film he had wanted as The King and the Mockingbird in 1980. At his own wish the 1953 version was never reissued. Pierre Brasseur, Serge Reggiani and Anouk Aimée are among the voices.
