What The King and the Mockingbird Is About
In an imaginary kingdom called Takicardia lives a tyrannical king. In a painting in his palace, a shepherdess and a chimney sweep step out of their frames at night and run. The king's own portrait also steps out, takes the real king's place, and goes after them. The only creature helping them is a bird whose son the king shot. The subject is not fairy tale but power. The king at the top of the palace never sees the people living on the lower floors, and the film builds that vertical order as a map of class. The giant robot at the end is not a victory; it leaves an emptiness. The production story is as strange as the film. Paul Grimault and the poet Jacques Prévert began the project in the fifties; the producer completed it without their consent and released it in 1952. Grimault fought for years in court, eventually bought the rights, and thirty years later remade it in his own cut. Prévert died before that new version appeared. The source is Andersen's tale of the shepherdess and the chimney sweep. The film also left its mark on Japanese animation; Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki both named it as one of the works that shaped them. Who it is for: viewers who like classic European animation and political fable. Who it is not for: anyone wanting pace; the film moves slowly and leaves some passages deliberately empty.
