The beginning of the twentieth century, in the Castilla la Vieja region of Spain. In Lujan, a village struck by drought, Juan, a poor farmer barely keeping himself, his wife and his son, comes up against the village moneylender and is imprisoned for it. For those left behind, staying and leaving weigh the same, and the village begins to empty. The film is counted among the best remembered works of Spanish silent cinema, holding the drought, the migration and the question of honour inside the same story. How heavy a weight the women carry in this story remains the most argued over part of the film. Carmen Viance plays the lead in Florian Rey’s fifty seven minute film, completed in 1930.
