What The Daughter Is About
The Daughter grew out of director Simon Stone's 2011 stage adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's The Wild Duck for Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre, a production that won four Sydney Theatre Awards and three Helpmann Awards and toured internationally to Oslo, Vienna, the Netherlands, and London. The film was Stone's feature directorial debut, having its world premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on June 4, 2015, then screening at Toronto and as the closing film of Venice Days at the 72nd Venice Film Festival. It won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress at the 2016 AACTA Awards. Who it's for: anyone curious about an Ibsen adaptation that moved from stage to screen and closed out Venice Days. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a period faithful adaptation of the source play, since the story is relocated to a modern setting.
