What The Day of the Locust Is About

Hollywood in the thirties. Tod Hackett is a young painter who has found work in a studio art department and become infatuated with his neighbour Faye. Faye wants to act and has no talent for it; instead she takes the life that Homer Simpson, a solitary accountant, can offer her. Around them move failures, extras and cockfighters. John Schlesinger directed, from Nathanael West's novel of 1939. The name is not a coincidence: the cartoon Homer Simpson was named after this book. It ends in a lynch mob erupting at a premiere, very violent, with a child's death.
