What Billy Liar Is About
A town in the north of England. Billy is a clerk at an undertaker's; the job is dull, his family does not understand him, and he is engaged to two women at once. To get out of the tangle he lies constantly, and in his head he has built an imaginary country called Ambrosia where he is a general and a hero. Then a real chance to go to London and write actually arrives in front of him. The question the film asks is whether dreaming moves a person or keeps them where they are. Schlesinger directed, and it introduced Julie Christie.
