What The Deadly Affair Is About
The Deadly Affair, directed by Sidney Lumet, is adapted from John le Carré's debut novel "Call for the Dead" (1961). The novel's protagonist, George Smiley, was renamed Charles Dobbs on screen, played by James Mason, because Paramount, not Columbia, this film's studio, held the screen rights to the name Smiley from its earlier deal with le Carré for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), even though Smiley was only a minor character there. Other character names, including police liaison Mendel and Smiley's wife Ann, were kept unchanged. Who it's for: anyone curious about a John le Carré adaptation whose protagonist's name had to change due to a studio rights dispute. Who it's not for: viewers wanting character names fully faithful to the source novel.
