Maximilian Schell
17 films · 1 series
Maximilian Schell's Academy Award for best actor came out of a defence lawyer: he played Hans Rolfe in Stanley Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg. In the American Film Institute's synopsis, Rolfe objects that if the defendants are guilty for applying the laws of their own country then the whole of Germany belongs in the dock, and the award line on that same page records his win in the leading actor category. Marlene Dietrich was in the cast with him. Twenty-three years afterwards Schell directed the film the catalogue carries as Marlene, in whose cast Dietrich appears. Three of his seventeen titles here hold his directing credit: Der Fußgänger, Marlene and Meine Schwester Maria. His character in Fred Zinnemann's Julia was Johann.
