What Return from the Ashes Is About
Dr Michele Wolf was sent to a concentration camp because she was Jewish, and comes back to her Paris home once the war is over. What she went through in the camp has changed her physically as well. She does not know that her husband Stanislaw, a chess master who lives off women, has been involved with her stepdaughter Fabi in her absence. His plans change the moment he learns she has come back. J. Lee Thompson directed it from Hubert Monteilhet's novel and builds the tension on a game of identity. It fits the cold, hungry, mistrustful condition of post-war Europe inside a single house. Ingrid Thulin plays a woman forced to prove her own name; Maximilian Schell and Samantha Eggar are the two halves of a complicity that keeps narrowing.
