Stanley Kramer

Stanley Kramer directed all ten of the films held here himself. His name appears three times over in the 1958 credits of The Defiant Ones, as director, as president and as producer; the film's river crossing was shot on the Kern River near Kernville, where Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier wore diving suits under their convict clothes and were chained together, and while walking in the fast water they were swept off and caught by stunt doubles a hundred yards downstream. The film took the Brotherhood Media Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1959. In 1967 he shot Spencer Tracy's last work in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Tracy dying of a heart attack on 10 June 1967, weeks after finishing his scenes. Kramer, Hepburn and Tracy had calculated that reshooting those scenes with another performer, should Tracy become unable to work, would cost Columbia some six hundred thousand dollars.
