What The Devil to Pay! Is About

Willie Hale, who spends everything he touches, turns up penniless at the family house in London once again. His father is not pleased, but Willie talks his way into staying. At the same time he starts working on Dorothy Hope, whose father made his money in linoleum and who was on the point of becoming engaged to a Russian aristocrat. George Fitzmaurice's 1930 film has the loose manner of the years before the Hays code. Ronald Colman's voice and timing are remarkably natural for the early sound era, with Loretta Young and Myrna Loy alongside. Light, short and well mannered.
