The Emperor's Candlesticks

The story takes place in prerevolutionary Russia and Europe. The Russian Grand Duke Peter has come to Vienna in secret. At a masked ball a woman draws him outside. In this way he falls into the hands of Polish nationalists. He is made to write a letter. The letter is to go to his father, the tsar. What is being asked for is an exchange. In return, a man sentenced to death will be released. Earlier petitions had never reached the tsar. So the letter is to be carried in secret. The task is given to Baron Stephan Wolensky. The letter is hidden in the secret compartment of a pair of candlesticks. An agent from the other side is after those same candlesticks. Travelling across Europe, the two of them fall in love. William Powell and Luise Rainer appear in the eighty nine minute film, an American production George Fitzmaurice finished in 1937.
