What The Distant Barking of Dogs Is About
In 2015, in the village of Hnutove in eastern Ukraine, close to the front line, young Oleg is living. Anti aircraft fire and rocket attacks go off dangerously near; most of the villagers have left, but Oleg stays with the grandmother who has looked after him since his mother’s death, because they have nowhere to go. The documentary watches this house over a long stretch: children’s games, fear, habit and the way war settles into a child’s daily life all become visible one by one. The account is not about the fighting but about growing up beside it. Simon Lereng Wilmont’s ninety one minute documentary was completed in 2017.
