What The Dog Is About
In the summer of 1972 John Wojtowicz tried to rob a bank in Brooklyn to pay for his lover's gender reassignment surgery, and it ended in a fourteen-hour hostage standoff broadcast live on television. Three years later that became Dog Day Afternoon. This documentary lets the man himself do the talking. Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren filmed him over years, starting in 2002. Wojtowicz is charming, coarse, funny and impossible; the more he explains himself the more he gives away. Around him are New York's gay liberation movement, in which he took part, and his mother Terry. What makes the film honest is that it neither excuses him nor puts him on trial.
