What The Doll Is About
A lonely night watchman at a department store develops a fixation on one of the mannequins. He ends up stealing her and taking her home, where they can be together all the time. One day she comes to life. Arne Mattsson never settles whether he is presenting this as a fantastical event or as something happening inside the man's head, and the whole tension comes out of that refusal. Per Oscarsson plays the watchman. It is set in Stockholm, shot in black and white, and spends most of its time in empty store corridors, looking at what loneliness turns into past a certain point.
