A working class woman looking after three children increasingly unsettles everyone around her with her behaviour. Her husband does not know what to do and eventually has her committed. The film gives her no diagnosis. That is its real question: not whether she is ill, but exactly what those around her expect of her and who set that expectation. The scenes are held very long and the discomfort is deliberate. John Cassavetes wrote and directed, financing it himself. Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk lead, and both were nominated for Academy Awards. Before watching: it runs two and a half hours, almost all of it indoors with people talking loudly. You may find that exhausting; it is meant to be.
