What Shadows Is About

Cassavetes made this film twice. The first shoot ran from late February to mid-May 1957, and a roughly sixty-minute 16 mm print played three free midnight screenings at New York's Paris Theater in November 1958. He disliked what he heard from the audience, threw out about two thirds of the material in 1959, and reshot it. What circulates today is the second version. The single print of the first version disappeared for forty-five years. Scholar Ray Carney chased it for seventeen and discovered it had ended up in a New York subway lost-and-found, then been auctioned to a man with no interest in film. Carney catalogued more than a hundred previously unrecognised differences between the two shoots. The story follows three siblings: a jazz singer, a sister light-skinned enough to be taken for white, and a drifting younger brother. Much of the dialogue came out of acting workshops, the camera is handheld on real streets, and the sound occasionally drops away. Who it is for: anyone curious about the moment American independent cinema began, who reads roughness as signature rather than failure. Who it is not for: viewers who want a built plot and clean audio. The film is genuinely scrappy and makes no apology for it.
