What The Eagle and the Hawk Is About
Stuart Walker's 1933 pre-Code film follows a British air squadron in the First World War. The pilot Fredric March plays keeps losing his observer on every flight; he collects medals and cannot carry them. Cary Grant is opposite him as a cold observer permanently at odds with him. The film does not present air combat as heroism; it is about what killing and surviving do to a person, and it shows war neurosis plainly even without naming it. That it does this in seventy-three minutes, and could say it in 1933, is worth noting. Carole Lombard is also in the cast.
