Myroslava Trofymchuk V Vladyslav Trofymchuk What The Earth Is Blue as an Orange Is About
Anna and her four children live in a front-line town in the Donbas. Outside there is shelling and uncertainty; inside, the house is still warm and full of people, and since everyone in the family loves cinema they decide to make a film together based on their own lives. Iryna Tsilyk points her camera both at their daily life and at that filmmaking, so what comes out is less a war documentary than a film about what making something in the middle of a war is for. Tsilyk went back to the same house again and again and lived with the family. It won the world documentary directing award at Sundance in 2020. In seventy-four minutes it argues that turning trauma into work can be a way of staying human.
