What The Emigrant Is About

Worn down by his family’s superstitions and by brothers who lean on him, Ram wants to go to Egypt to learn agriculture. They take him across Sinai and then sell him to a man working for a commander from Thebes, who is impressed enough by the boy’s drive to hand him a stretch of barren land outside the capital. Ram ends up caught between that commander and his wife. Youssef Chahine took the story from the account of Joseph but changed every name to get it past the censor. Seven hundred and fifty thousand people had already seen it when a lawsuit had it banned; he won after a year in court, and a second suit banned it again.
