What The Emperor's Nightingale Is About
The film opens with a live action story about a rich child growing up alone in a large house, hemmed in by rules. When the boy goes to bed and falls asleep his toys come to life and begin, in stop motion puppetry, to tell a tale: the story of an emperor who prefers the sound of a jewelled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale. When the emperor is on his deathbed, what brings him back is not the mechanical bird but the voice of the nightingale that returns. The seventy two minute Czechoslovak film by Jiří Trnka and Miloš Makovec was adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s 1843 tale The Nightingale and is among the known examples of puppet animation. It was completed in 1949, and the American version made in 1951 was narrated by Boris Karloff.
