What Alice Is About

A girl playing in her room follows a stuffed rabbit that climbs out of its case and runs, and enters a world made of drawers, socks and bones. The film does not make the fable charming: every character is built from old toys, animal skeletons and kitchen implements, and their movement is deliberately clattering. The girl is the only living performer and speaks all the lines herself. Jan Svankmajer directed; it is his first feature, adapted from Lewis Carroll's book. A real warning: this is not a film for children. The use of taxidermy and severed limbs is disturbing and the register stays nightmarish throughout.
