The House

One house, three periods, three sets of directors. Enda Walsh's anthology hands each chapter to a different team. The first, And Heard Within, A Lie Is Spun, is set in the late nineteenth century, where a poor family is mysteriously given a luxurious house and pays heavily for it. Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels directed. The second, Then Lost Is Truth That Can't Be Won, takes place in the early twenty-first century in a city of anthropomorphic rodents dealing with an infestation and some strange tenants, directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr. The third, Listen Again And Seek The Sun, follows cats coping with rising floodwater after the end of things, directed by Paloma Baeza. Technically it is notable for relying mostly on in-camera stop motion rather than digital compositing. Netflix released it on 14 January 2022. Rotten Tomatoes has 97 percent of 36 reviews positive. It won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation and took several Annie nominations. Who it is for: viewers who like adult animation and uncanny fables. Who it is not for: anyone planning to watch with children. The puppets look sweet and all three chapters are genuinely dark, the second especially unpleasant.
