A Useful Ghost

Nat is dead. The cause was air pollution: dust. Her husband cannot mourn her, and she comes back, though not in a body: she moves into the vacuum cleaner. He accepts this; his family does not. Then his family notices something: there is work to be had out of this ghost. So useful ghosts start being sorted from useless ones, and Nat has to demonstrate which side she is on. Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke directs the Thai film; a hundred and thirty minutes, with Davika Hoorne as Nat. It is his first feature and it won the Grand Prize of Critics' Week at Cannes in 2025. Boonbunchachoke began writing it in 2017 as an indirect way of talking about Thailand after the 2014 coup.
