Tux and Fanny

Albert Birney's 2019 animation follows two friends living together in a forest. Small events succeed each other: footballs bursting, a missing cat, a hole in the yard; the film lists them in sections. The visual manner draws on video games. The characters move on a pixel-like plane, the camera looks from the side and the space is built like a game screen. This relates to the film having grown out of a game of the same name. The narrative builds no plot. The humour rests on repetition and patience; the characters speak very little and the jokes work through timing. Birney made the film largely on his own. Who it's for: those who like independent animation and minimal humour. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a story; the film is deliberately aimless.
