What The Enchanted Desna Is About
The film was adapted from the book in which the director Oleksandr Dovzhenko told the story of his own childhood, and it falls into two parts. In the first the village on the bank of the Desna looks like a fairy tale seen through the eyes of six year old Sashko; the fields, the animals, the grown ups and the river all grow to a child’s measure. In the second the same Sashko comes back as an old colonel liberating his native village during the war, and thinks again about what he saw. Yuliya Solntseva carries the writer’s text into cinema with images of her own, and the story leans openly on Ukrainian folklore. The seventy seven minute production was completed in 1964.
