Richard Heinberg M Matthew Simmons What The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream Is About
After the Second World War North Americans put much of their new wealth into the suburbs: space, an affordable house, family life, the promise of moving up. Gregory Greene's documentary argues that the whole arrangement rests on one thing, cheap oil, and that the peak of that oil was near. Among the voices are James Howard Kunstler, Richard Heinberg and Matthew Simmons. The timetable did not hold. The near term peak predictions made around 2004 and 2005 were undone by the shale boom that followed, and world production rose rather than fell. The film's structural claim, that suburban settlement depends on cheap energy, sits apart from the question of dates and is still argued over.
