The Enforcer

An action film set in Hong Kong. Kung is a policeman from the mainland. His assignment is secret: he will get inside a criminal organisation and gather evidence. For that he has to lie to his wife and son as well; the family believes he has turned to crime. His wife is ill. Before she dies she wants to tell their son what his father really does, and cannot. The boy goes looking for him. He reaches Hong Kong and gets into his circle; the child knows how to fight and can defend himself. At that point the assignment is in danger. The organisation learns of the boy and Kung's identity comes close to being exposed. The emotional centre is the relationship between father and son; the action is built around it. The child performer Xie Miao stands out in the fights; he does most of it himself and works in the same choreography as the adults. Jet Li plays Kung and Anita Mui the contact inside the organisation. Corey Yuen directed and did the fight choreography. It is a typical example of Hong Kong action cinema of the 1990s: fast cutting, wire work and emotional melodrama together. A solid choice for anyone who likes Hong Kong action and fight choreography. For a viewer expecting measured melodrama, the film keeps the emotional dose high.
