Yes, Madam!

An action film set in Hong Kong. A murder is committed in a hotel. A microfilm the dead man was carrying disappears. Two small-time thieves take it. They do not know what is on it and tuck it inside a passport. The microfilm holds a syndicate's records. The syndicate wants it back. The police are looking too. Inspector Ng takes the case. Hard, by the book, and on bad terms with everyone. Another officer comes from London. Inspector Morris is working the same file. The two have to work together. From there the film is a chase. The thieves on one side, the syndicate on the other, two police behind them. The thieves' line is written as comedy. The two men are inept, argue constantly, and grasp far too late what they have got into. That mixture of tone is the most argued-over thing about it: one scene is a joke, the next is a broken bone. What the narrative is interested in is not an investigation but rules: its idea is that neither officer can get anywhere by law and that both end up having to give up the badge. The final fight takes place in a building. Glass, railings, stairs and falls; the section runs about ten minutes. The fights are genuinely hard. Stunt protection in Hong Kong cinema of this period was slight and the film shows it. This is Michelle Yeoh's first major action role; she had trained as a dancer and learned to fight for the work. Who it is for: anyone who likes 1980s Hong Kong action and fight films with a female cast. Who it is not for: anyone looking for consistent tone; the shifts between comedy and violence are abrupt and the plot is weak.
