The Exile

In seventeenth century England the throne is being fought over. Charles II, the rightful heir, is driven out of his country. The force behind that is Oliver Cromwell and the men working for him. Charles ends up in the Netherlands. He lives there keeping his name to himself. His days pass quietly in the countryside. He falls for a woman named Katie. He begins to like this life. But the people hunting him pick up his trail. Colonel Ingram, an associate of Cromwell, arrives with his men. The exiled monarch has to reach for his sword. He moves back and forth between flight and fighting. The film is a swashbuckler and a love story at once. The loneliness of exile is part of it as well. Charles has to choose between the throne and the life he found in the country. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Maria Montez appear in the ninety five minute film, an American production Max Ophüls finished in 1947.
