What The Expedition Is About

Satyajit Ray's film opens with Narsingh, a taxi driver who owns and drives his own car. Proud, quick to anger and convinced of his Rajput descent, he returns to his home region hoping to rebuild his life. But the local trader who gives him work is not running a clean business: there is smuggling, and there is trafficking in people. Narsingh looks away from it at first, and then can no longer look away. The film is interested less in the crime than in how long the story a man tells himself will hold. Soumitra Chatterjee leads, opposite Waheeda Rehman. It is one of the rare Ray films shot through rural Bengal like a road picture, with the car as a second character.
