What The FBI Story Is About
Chip Hardesty has given thirty years to the FBI. On the point of retiring, he tells the younger agents his own history, and what he tells turns out to be the Bureau's: the Ku Klux Klan in the twenties, Dillinger and the bank robbers in the thirties, German spies during the war, Soviet agents after it. There is a story running home alongside it too, in what his wife Lucy put up with for years, the job and the loneliness the job brought into the house. Mervyn LeRoy directs; two hours and twenty-nine minutes, with James Stewart as Hardesty and Vera Miles as Lucy. It was made with the Bureau's full backing, and Hoover's FBI signed off on the script and on the people making it. So it is the agency's own account of itself; expecting criticism from it is pointless.
