Charlotte Pryce B Benni Quintero G Gary Mairs I Isabel Higgins What The Final Exit of the Disciples of Ascensia Is About
Jonni Peppers's 2019 American film follows Amy, who joins a UFO cult because of a video tape she receives. The tape says she is a disciple of an alien species; Amy takes a new name and begins living under the watch of the group's founder. The film builds its cult narrative as an aesthetic. The image is deliberately degraded; analogue video noise, low resolution and mixed animation techniques are used together. The form imitates the group's own claim on reality. It was made on a very small budget and largely as a one-person production. The tone sits between comedy and sadness; the reasons people join are not mocked but shown as loneliness. Who it's for: those who like experimental animation and low-budget independent cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a technically clean image; the degradation is a deliberate choice.
