What The First Grader Is About
When Kenya made primary education free in 2003, an eighty-four-year-old man turned up at a mountain village school asking for a place at a desk. Kimani Maruge was a real person, a villager who had fought in the Mau Mau uprising and wanted to learn to read. His teacher defends him and everyone around them tries to stop it. The hardest part of the film is his past: what happened in the colonial camps was denied by Britain for many years, and in 2013 the government reached a settlement with Mau Mau victims. Oliver Litondo and Naomie Harris carry it.
