What The Flirtation of Girls Is About
Hamam, a poor teacher of Arabic, is dismissed from his post at a girls’ primary school for being unable to keep order among his mischievous pupils, and loses hope in everything. A friend who works for a pasha finds him new work: he is to give private lessons to the pasha’s only daughter Leyla so that she can pass an examination. Leyla treats him more as a friend than as a teacher, teaches him again how to enjoy life, and before long he becomes attached to her; but the difference in class between them and the life she already has are plain. In Anwar Wagdi’s hundred and six minute Egyptian film, Naguib el-Rihani plays Hamam and Leila Mourad plays Leyla, with music by Mohammed Abdel Wahab. It opened on 22 September 1949; el-Rihani died of typhus while the shoot was still going on, and it became his last film.
