What The Flower in Hell Is About
In Seoul just after the Korean War, young Dong-sik comes from the countryside to take his older brother Yeong-sik home. But the brother is part of a gang stealing and selling goods from an American base, and is living with a woman named Sonya, whose own life depends on the base. While Dong-sik cannot decide whether to stay, the tension between the three of them grows. The film shows harshly the poverty after the war, the economy of occupation and the place of women within it. The account moves without accusing any of the three, showing instead how hemmed in each of them is. Choi Eun-hee appears in Shin Sang-ok’s eighty eight minute Korean film; it was completed in 1958.
