What The Flying Classroom Is About
A boy who has always been the one left outside arrives at a new boarding school and, for the first time, finds friends. He is quickly absorbed into the class and just as quickly lands in the middle of a long-running feud with the boys from the school down the road. Alongside all of it, rehearsals for the Christmas play they are writing keep going. It is adapted from Erich Kastner's novel, a book read by generations in Germany and filmed several times, of which this 1973 version is one. Werner Jacobs never shrinks the children and takes their sense of justice completely seriously. That was Kastner's point throughout: on courage and honesty, children are not behind adults at all.
