What The Found Footage Phenomenon Is About
Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott's 2021 documentary examines horror films made with the found footage technique. Its origin is traced back to the late seventies and the technique's change with the spread of cheap cameras is followed. The interest is credibility. Producers describe what they did to convince audiences the footage was real; marketing methods and the legal arguments some films caused are also covered. Directors working inside the genre speak. The narrative neither defends nor attacks it; it shows the limits of the technique and why it has been repeated so often. Clips take wide space. Who it's for: those who like the history of horror cinema and genre studies. Who it's not for: viewers who want the surprises of the films preserved; the documentary shows the endings of many of them.
