What The Gamers: Dorkness Rising Is About
Lodge has been running the same table for years and can never get his group to finish an adventure. The reason is his players: nobody wants to deal with the evil necromancer, and everyone is busy chatting up barmaids, provoking villagers and sabotaging each other. So Lodge drops two newcomers into the party. One is a character he runs himself, which the group distrusts on sight; the other is a woman. The film shows the players at the table and the fantasy world in their heads at once, and the two keep bleeding into each other. Matt Vancil directs the American comedy; a hundred and five minutes. It is the work of a small independent outfit, made for an audience that plays tabletop role-playing games. The jokes come not from fantasy films but from what players do with the rules.
