The Garden of Evening Mists

As a child Yun Ling was held in a Japanese internment camp, and she lost her younger sister there. After the war she travels to the highlands of Malaya. What she wants is a garden made in her sister’s memory. For that she goes to a well known Japanese gardener, Nakamura Aritomo. Aritomo will not work for her; instead he takes her on as an apprentice. So Yun Ling learns to build the garden with her own hands. The film is set during the Malayan Emergency and brings that period into the account, which is adapted from Tan Twan Eng’s novel. Angelica Lee Sin-Jie and Sylvia Chang play Yun Ling and Hiroshi Abe plays Aritomo, in Tom Lin’s Malaysian and British coproduction of 2019.
