The Garden of Sinners: Future Gospel

An additional chapter set after Shiki's known story ends. There is a man in the city who sees the future and tries to change what he sees, which leads him to punish the perpetrators of crimes not yet committed. Opposite him stands a small girl who sees the future differently: what she sees always arrives at one outcome, and she does not try to alter it. The subject is not prophecy but what knowing the future does to a person. The more the man tries to prevent what he sees, the more violence he produces; the girl does nothing and is more at peace. The film makes no open choice between them. The form keeps the series' known style: long silences, low light and short fights that arrive abruptly. Ufotable's image work is high here too, particularly the rain and the glass surfaces. It was made after the seven films of the main series were completed and rests on a side story Nasu Kinoko wrote later. The narrative does not affect the main events; its real function is to show what came after Shiki. Maaya Sakamoto voices Shiki. Tomonori Sudo directs. Who it is for: viewers who have finished the series. Who it is not for: anyone starting here; the film tells nothing to someone who does not know the previous seven.
