What The Getting of Wisdom Is About
Laura Tweedle-Rambotham, who grew up in the Australian outback, is sent at fourteen to an established girls’ college in Melbourne with money her mother has saved coin by coin. What she meets at the school is not lessons but an order set up by girls richer than she is; her clothes, her accent and her mother’s work leave her outside it. Laura tries to get in by learning to invent, to exaggerate and, when required, to lie, and is slow to see what this costs her. Bruce Beresford’s hundred and one minute Australian film was adapted from Henry Handel Richardson’s 1910 novel, which is thought to draw on the author’s own school years in Melbourne. Susannah Fowle plays Laura; it was completed in 1977.
