What The Ghost of Yotsuya Is About
The film rests on one of the ghost stories most often told in Japan. A murdered wife comes back to take her revenge. At the centre of the account are how that death happened and who was responsible for it. The calculations inside the samurai order carry the story. The film builds its fear not through sudden shocks but through guilt. That an injustice does not let go of the person who committed it is the real idea. It comes from the tradition of the ghost story in Japanese cinema of 1959. The eighty four minutes are given to a single account of revenge. Kazuo Hasegawa and Yasuko Nakada appear in Kenji Misumi’s Japanese film, completed in 1959.
