What The Goddess: How I Fell in Love Is About
Faina, a young investigator, is running the file on a girl who has disappeared, but the film is not interested in the case being solved. Faina experiments on herself in order to reach a dead lover, and the narration deliberately rubs out the line between waking and dream, so what emerges is not a detective story but a surrealist drama. Renata Litvinova wrote and directed it and plays Faina herself; it was her first feature as a director. Maksim Sukhanov, Svetlana Svetlichnaya and Viktor Sukhorukov are in the cast. The visual language and the way the film speaks read as an extension of Litvinova’s own manner as an actress: a tone that uses artifice on purpose, flirts with death and defends strangeness. The film runs a hundred and five minutes and opened on 30 November 2004.
