What The Grass Harp Is About
Orphaned at the end of the 1930s, Collin is sent to live with his father's cousins Verena and Dolly. Verena is wealthy, commanding and in business; Dolly is her opposite, a woman who makes a remedy from herbs she gathers in the fields and has never harmed anyone. When Verena decides she wants the money from that remedy, Dolly, Collin and the housekeeper walk out and move into a tree house, and the town sets about getting them down. It is adapted from Truman Capote's novel, a book built on his own childhood. Charles Matthau directed, and his father Walter Matthau is in the cast. It treats the American South, the pressure of a small town and the odd little community up in the tree with real tenderness. The supporting cast is full of great character actors.
